Philip L. Hughes, CPA

Phil began his career as a staff accountant with Coopers & Lybrand in Columbus, Ohio in 1984. As a Supervisor, he was introduced to the insurance loss consulting industry while preparing a business interruption claim for a client.  In 1989, he joined the firm of Meaden & Moore in Dublin, Ohio as an Insurance Loss Consultant where he was a Project Manager for seven years.  Phil was then hired by Arkwright Mutual Insurance Company and FM Global as a Senior Values Analyst in Northern California where he assisted the underwriting and claims departments in assessing risk and measuring business interruption losses and determining maximum foreseeable loss exposures for large commercial accounts.

In 2002, Phil joined Matson, Driscoll & Damico in Walnut Creek, California as a Senior Manager.  At MD&D, Phil supervised a team of staff accountants performing forensic accounting and measuring various types of losses for insurance and litigation purposes.  He was the Project Manager on a builders' risk loss that included loss of rents, extra expense and soft costs totaling more than $129 million.  Phil also led a CAT team of accountants following Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans assisting a major carrier in settling problematic losses.

Phil earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from The Ohio State University, graduating in 1984. He became a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Ohio in 1987, and also in the State of California in 1997.  Each year, Phil exceeds the minimum continuing professional education requirements established by the state by attending educational seminars and other training associated with forensic accounting, public accounting and the insurance industry to maintain his CPA status.

While in California, Phil was active in a number of professional organizations including the Eastbay Claims Association where he served as Chapter President in 2005, and Treasurer during the period 2002-2004, 2006.  He was also a member of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.  Currently, Phil is an active member of various Claims Associations in Ohio (Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Dayton and Toledo).

Phil treats every client with respect and integrity, and provides independent financial analysis and insurance consulting services to the
insurance industry.  He understands that client trust in a complete, accurate and efficient work product is the goal of all Hughes principals and staff.

In his spare time, Phil loves college football, enjoys riding his Harley-Davidson, spending time with his family and making custom furniture.
